A Legacy of the Heart

The first Welsh Home was founded in 1919 on Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights by The Ladies Auxiliary of the Welsh Society of Cleveland, Ohio, now known as the Women's Welsh Clubs of America. With a commitment to helping people who could no longer care for themselves, the home was soon filled and the search began for more land and larger quarters.

A suitable property was found on the west side of Cleveland in the then rural community of Rocky River. The Rocky River home, described at the time as having nine bedrooms, two living rooms, and five bathrooms, as well as six cows, calves, a bull and a horse, with an orchard and garden, became the second Welsh Home with its opening in 1922. In 1953, the original farm house was razed and construction of the present Welsh Home began.

We met recently with Administrator Marilyn Davis, and listened as she provided this overview of The Welsh Home's services and offerings;

The Welsh Home is a small, intimate facility where all of our residents and aides know each other by name. We offer long and short-term care, assisted living, skilled and intermediate nursing care, rehabilitation services, restorative services, and pastoral care in a family-like environment. We involve families in the care, activity, decisions, and lives of their loved ones, and are respected in our community because we are resident-centered and dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all who live with us.

We provide a warm, pleasant atmosphere with a living room, dining room, year-round porch, courtyard, and outdoor patio overlooking the duck pond. We are a Medicare and Medicaid certified facility with thirty-four bed licensed for skilled and intermediate nursing care and twelve beds licensed for rest home care. Most of our rooms are private, and all rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished, and include a private full or half bathroom.

Our Activity Director holds special and annual events designed to bring residents, community members, and families together. From bingo and games to movies and sing-a-longs, these activities provide daily entertainment and enjoyment. Residents are also involved in our bell choir and exercise classes, and a Welsh Home bus safely transports residents to the zoo, picnics, and other outings.

This is a place where people come to live life more fully. Our philosophy of care focuses on respecting the spirit of each resident. It is a commitment that shows in the way we help them maintain their dignity and independence. We respect each resident's personal rights, allow them to enjoy life, and provide a safe, caring environment for them to continue developing their lives to the fullest. There is a feeling of life here. You'll notice it as you walk through our home, see our residents involved in activities, and watch them enjoy each other's company. Residents here are not observers watching life go by -- they are truly involved in living.

The Welsh Home is open to people of every race, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin. We invite you to visit with us, tour our beautiful home, experience our family atmosphere, and see the level of personal care each resident enjoys.
