Greg Allen's first summer job during his high school days was with an Amish contractor in Geauga County, Ohio. Starting as a laborer, he carried blocks and mixed cement before being promoted to the carpentry crew. He continued working for the same contractor every summer throughout his four years at Kent State University. In 1975, Greg and his wife Carolyn moved to Avon, Ohio where they founded Greg Allen Builders & Remodelers. In 2007, they incorporated their business as Greg Allen Builders, Inc. where Greg presides as President, Carolyn handles the secretarial duties, and their son Michael is working under the tutelage of Greg's master carpenters and craftsmen. We met with Greg and Carolyn recently, and listened as they described the keys to their success;
Greg Allen Builders, Inc. offers the highest quality craftsmanship for residential building and renovation on the west side of Cleveland. We are best known for our residential renovations where we add new additions to existing structures in a manner that makes the completed project appear to be all original construction. We work primarily on finer homes in Bay Village, Westlake, Rocky River, and Lakewood. Our business is built on quality craftsmanship and customer service. Our customers are our best salespeople. Many who call us are already familiar with our work, personally knowing several customers we have worked for in the past. Each prospective client is presented with a list of previous customers and current jobs in progress. When preparing a proposal for a new project, we build an itemized, line item budget listing every expense from materials and labor to our mark-up. This enables our customers to know exactly what is to happen on their project and how much it will cost before we begin. A standard procedure among many builders is the fixed bid method that includes a generous profit margin due to financial uncertainties inherent in any building project, but we bill our customers for only the actual costs involved plus our margin of profit. The result is a top quality job at a very competitive price.
Our tradesmen are full-time employees covered by Unemployment Insurance and Workers' Compensation, in addition to receiving health insurance coverage. As we are booked anywhere from six months to a year in advance, we keep our employees busy year 'round which allows us to attract the highest caliber tradesmen.
